All recipients of the SASA/NRF funding are expected to attend the SASA 2016 conference. The program and expectations for bursary holders are as follows:

  • Monday, 28th November 8.30 am: Introductory lecture on how to get the most out of attending a conference.

  • Monday, 28th November: Attend one of the 5 workshops being offered on that day.

  • Tuesday to Thursday: Attend conference talks, making notes of your favourite talks.

  • Thursday, 1 December pm: Meeting with all bursary holders during which you will report back on your 5 favourite talks and Professor Trevor Hastie will talk to you about life in academia.

  • We will finish off with a pizza evening.

Do take note of the Young Statistician’s event on the Tuesday evening and get your quiz teams together!

Your conference attendance will be funded. Please take note of the special arrangements:

  • Please register for the conference by 30 September 2016. You should forward your conference registration invoice to the LOC (sasa2016.uct@gmail.com) and we will forward those to SASA  for payment – do make sure to tick the box on the registration from that identify you as a SASA/NRF bursary holder. Also remember to indicate which workshop you will be attending and do register for the Young Statistician’s event at the same time.

  • You have to stay in a UCT residence. (If you choose to stay with your departmental colleagues you will have to pay for your own accommodation.) Please complete the accommodation booking that is available on the conference website by choosing “UCT Residence Accommodation”. In the “Comment” field, please indicate that you are a SASA/NRF bursary holder. Please forward your invoice for accommodation to sasa2016.uct@gmail.com.

  • You should make your own travel arrangements and forward invoices and receipts  (and e-tickets) to Professor Paul Mostert (pjmos@sun.ac.za)  who will be able to reimburse you for travel expenses. Please note that we will only refund flights and cannot contribute towards costs associated with road or rail travel. Ideally, ask your Statistics department to pay for your ticket since it is simpler for us to reimburse departments than individuals. Please also note that should you make any changes to your flight bookings for whatever reason, any resulting costs will be for you own account.

  • Please book your flights before 30 September 2016. Note that your attendance at the conference is required from Monday morning 8 am ( to register prior to your workshop)  to Thursday afternoon 6 pm. So you should ideally arrive on Sunday, 27th December and depart on Friday, 2 December. Shuttles from the airport will be provided on Sunday,27th November  at 1pm and at 4 pm and on Friday, 2nd December at 9 am. If you arrive or depart at other times and do not wish to wait for a shuttle, transport from and to the airport will be for your own account.
